Next Lunch and Learn Set for January 9 University of North Carolina
(UNC) cancer specialist Dr. Nigel Key will present a free community
workshop on Friday, January 9 from noon to 1 p.m. on the topic of blood
clots and clotting disorders. The workshops, referred to as Lunch and Learn, are a part of a UNC Cancer Care Initiative requested by the Dare County Commissioners to bring the latest in cancer research, treatment and prevention to the county. Dr. Key is the Harold Roberts Distinguished Professor of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. With colleagues, he recently received grants of almost $2 million to investigate a potential early-warning indicator of venous thromboembolism, a leading cause of disability and death in cancer patients. According to Dr. Key, in the condition, clots initially form in deep veins of the legs but can break loose and travel to the lungs. Anti-cancer drugs can increase the risk of venous thromboembolism because they increase the release of a clotting protein from the tumor and blood vessels into the circulatory system. The study, involving laboratory and clinical research, will determine if levels of this clotting protein can be used as a biomarker of a pre-thrombotic state in patients with pancreatic or colon cancer. Each Lunch and Learn workshop session is videotaped and broadcast on Cable Channel MAGIC 20 (Municipal and County Government Information Channel) every day until the next session is videotaped. The workshops are broadcast in the 10 a.m. slot and will be broadcast in the 7 p.m. slot whenever a Commissioners' meeting or Town Council meeting is not being shown. A complimentary light lunch will be served. Seating is limited and registration is requested. Anyone wishing to attend the workshop should contact Dare County Public Relations Coordinator Dorothy Toolan at 252-475-5903 or dorothy@darenc.com Anyone wishing to set an appointment with Dr. Key on January 9 or needing more information about the UNC/Dare County Partnership in Cancer Care program should contact the UNC Nurse Navigators at (252) 449-8265.
