Recycling

The Recycling Department is responsible for the processing and marketing of recyclable material collected throughout unincorporated Dare County. The department services numerous drop off collection centers within the county and also offers a commercial pick up of materials to businesses. The department operates two (2) yard debris collection sites and manages disposal of automotive tires, motor oil, lead acid batteries, and used appliances. Periodically this department conducts special collections for pesticides and other household hazardous materials.

Solid Waste and Recycling Services [more]

There are several drop-off recycling centers in Dare County. Some are located in the towns and some are within the county. Most accept glass, aluminum and steel cans, some plastic (No. 1 & 2), paper and cardboard. Some County Centers accept used motor oil and old tires also. Call 475-5890 for further information. 

County Operated Centers and Hours

Buxton

Location: Behind Centura Bank, Buxton Back Road
Hours: 8:30AM-4:00PM, Monday through Friday; 8:30AM-Noon, Saturday
Accepts: (No charge) No. 1 and 2 plastic, green, clear and brown glass, steel and aluminum cans, mixed paper and cardboard. Also, used automotive tires OFF RIMS, used motor oil, RESIDENTIAL yard debris (branches for chipping up to 8 inches in diameter). All COMMERCIAL yard debris will be charged at a rate of 50.00 per ton for disposal.

Dare County Public Works Compound

Location: 1018 Driftwood Drive, Manteo
Hours: 8:00AM-5:00PM Monday through Friday, Saturday 8:00AM-5:00PM Memorial Day through Labor Day, 8:00AM-Noon Labor Day to Memorial Day
Accepts: (No charge) No. 1 and 2 plastic, green clear and brown glass, steel and aluminum cans, mixed paper and card- board. Also, used automotive tires OFF RIMS, used motor oil, lead acid automotive batteries, and RESIDENTIAL yard debris (Branches for chipping up to 8 inches in diameter), straw, pampas grass, leaves etc. for composting. All COMMERCIAL yard debris will be charged at a rate of 50.00 per ton and will have to be taken to the C & D land-fill.

Stumpy Point 

Location: Community Center, Bayview Drive
Hours: Open Daily, 24 hours unattended

Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo

Location: Rodanthe Harbor off Myrna Peters Road
Hours: Open Daily 24 hours

Hatteras Village

Location: Ferry Terminal Parking Lot
Hours: Open Daily 24 hours

Town Operated Centers and Hours

Kill Devil Hills

Location: Public Works complex on Colington Road (RPR 1217)
Hours: 8:00AM-4:00PM Monday through Friday, 8:00AM-2:00PM Saturday
Accepts: Call the town offices at 480-4080 for locations and materials accepted.

Kitty Hawk

Location: Located off Bob Perry Road
Hours: 8:00AM-3:00PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
Closed on Wednesday
8 AM-Noon Saturday
Closed on Holidays

Nags Head

Location: (1) 2200 Lark Ave. (behind Nags Head Food Lion Store)

(2) Mobile units located permanently at the Nags Head Town Hall and South Nags Head Fire Station

(3) Nags Head Mobile trailer, call 441-1122 for daily Location and for further information

Hours: Residential Only 7:00AM-3:30PM Monday through Friday

Southern Shores No drop-off Recycling

Location: Curbside pick-up only
Hours: Every Monday morning from the last day of May through the last Monday of September; 1st and 3rd Mondays throughout the remainder of the year
