Guideline on Businesses Located in Dare County

All businesses located in Dare County are subject to business personal property tax.  The listing of assets are to be taken care of though the Dare County Business Personal Property Tax Department in the 1st part of January through February 15th of the current year.  Any business that fails to list during the regular listing period and is discovered by the business personal property tax department, or lists late, is subject to a 10% penalty.  Extensions can be requested in writing to the Business Personal Property Department no later than February 15th.  The extension deadline is no later than April 15th.    Tax bills are mailed once a year in July.  Businesses located in Nags Head will receive a separate bill, one from the county and one from the town.  The other five incorporated towns, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, and Southern Shores are billed by the county and will reflect the town and county tax rate in one bill.

Personal Property tax payments are now being accepted by Visa, MasterCard and debit cards in all locations of the Tax Department.

Businesses operating as a hotel, motel, cottage court, or weekly rental are subject to an occupancy tax.  For more information contact the Occupancy Tax Department, at (252) 475-5964. 

Businesses operating as a food service are subject to a meals tax.  For more information contact the Food & Beverage Department, at (252) 475-5957.
