NEW PIN NUMBERS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED FOR 2012
Dare County has switched its mapping datum to the current official horizontal datum, NAD 83. The switch from NAD 27 datum to NAD 83 has resulted in each of the County’s current PIN numbers being changed. Additional details on this change are provided below.
The horizontal control network or datum for U.S. surveying and mapping activities is based on the North American Datum. It began with the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD 27), which was redefined and readjusted, and in 1986 the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) released the new datum, the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). The datum has again been readjusted as recently as 2007, NAD 83(NSRS2007).
In North Carolina, the State Legislature updated G.S. 102-1.1, which is the general statute on the State’s Official Survey Base, to be based on NAD 83. Dare County’s assignment of Parcel Identification Numbers (PIN) started in 1981 using the datum NAD 27. The 2010 Statewide Orthoimagery Project, which was conducted to produce a seamless statewide dataset to expedite 911 responses, is based on the latest NAD 83 adjustment, NAD 83(NSRS2007). All counties that still utilize NAD 27 needed to convert their spatial data and PIN determinations from NAD 27 to NAD 83 in order to utilize the statewide aerial imagery in their external and internal operations. Many counties have already switched from the previous official horizontal datum, NAD 27, to the current official horizontal datum, NAD 83, for referencing their mapping and photogrammetry products and the resulting coordinate-based Parcel Identification Number (PIN) determinations.
